Five reasons to go for the chop

Short hair is quite possibly one of the easiest looks to pull off and the great thing is, it doesn’t need hours of styling, either.

It also works with any texture and hair colour, and is the quickest way to transform your look and the way you feel about life. Not convinced? Here are our five reasons to go for the chop:

REASON 1: You’ll get rid of unhealthy hair

REASON 2: It’s a chance to start again (so says the Queen of Reinvention Rihanna)

REASON 3: Short hair never goes out of style. Just look at Audrey Hepburn

REASON 4: It’s truly liberating (Miley Cyrus certainly thought so)

REASON 5: It’s not permanent. That’s the great thing about hair - it grows back!

How celebrities keep their hair looking red-carpet ready

Kim Kardashian

With their huge incomes and glam squads on call 24/7 to keep them looking red-carpet ready, it’s no surprise that celebrities are the ultimate #hairgoals.

But there are certain things you can do to keep your hair looking as good as a celebrity.

Here we reveal six celeb secrets to keeping your hair in shape.

Celebrity secret 1: They take their haircare regime seriously - and stick to it

Hollywood stars know looking good is their job so they take their beauty routine extremely seriously. That means regular haircuts and deeply hydrating conditioning treatments.

Secret 2: There are no “off” days

When they’re not working, celebrities still need to look after their image. And that’s why a day off means a day restoring and reviving their hair in a conditioning mask.

This will not only combat the negative effects of constant heat styling but also any chemical damage.

Secret 3: They use heat protectants when styling

Too much straightening, curling and blow-drying plays havoc with hair.

Using an oil or heat spray before styling is the best way to protect the hair.

Secret 4: They take vitamins, because beauty comes from within

Supplements can not only ensure scalp health, they can help hair grow faster and thicker.

Your hair needs vitamin A to stay moisturised and grow (also find it in sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach and kale if you prefer to get your nutrients from food).

Research has also shown that vitamin D could help create new follicles - the tiny pores in the scalp where new hair can grow.

Secret 5: They know how to brush wet hair without damaging it

Be careful what type of brush you use on wet hair, which is at its most fragile.

A wide tooth wooden comb is the most gentle, or even simply run your fingers through your damp hair.

Secret 6: They use wigs and weaves

Whether it’s for a big role, photo shoot or special event, hair pieces are commonplace in the celeb world - and they are a great way to change up a look and have fun with your style.

Wash your hair and while it’s still damp, spritz with a heat protector product like TRESemme protect heat defence styling spray. Apply a volumizing mousse like Bumble and Bumble thickening full form mousse to create hold and volume.

Dry the hair with a paddle brush, brushing the hair in different directions. Once the hair is 70 per cent dry, section the hair into four with your preferred parting.

Take a medium sized ceramic brush and starting at the nape, blow dry sections of hair no bigger than your brush. Focus on creating root lift and volume at the roots, yet a smooth and straight finish through the mid-lengths and ends.

When you’ve finished blow drying, take a vertical section starting at the hairline from the parting to the front of the ear. In a two inch section, curl the hair rotating the irons in a half rotation, curling away from the face. Continue taking vertical sections working your way towards the centre of the nape area. Begin on the opposite side of the head and repeat the process, curling away from the face.

To finish the look, use your paddle brush to brush out the curls and mess them up a bit with your fingertips. Finally set the style with a fine hold mist hairspray such as L’Oreal Ellnett extra strength hairspray.
