How to keep dyed hair colour bright for longer

There's nothing better than leaving the hair salon with freshly coloured hair, but keeping that vibrant shade looking its best requires the right aftercare.

Choose sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner

One of the first and most important steps is choosing a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner. Harsh cleansing ingredients can strip away colour molecules, causing your shade to fade faster. Sulphate-free formulas are often a great option for colour-treated hair.

Wash your hair less

Washing your hair less often can also help preserve colour. Every wash removes a small amount of pigment, so extending the time between washes where possible can make a noticeable difference. Dry shampoo can be useful for refreshing hair between wash days.

Ease off the heat styling

Heat styling is another common cause of colour fading. Straighteners, curling wands and hairdryers can all contribute to dryness and dullness if used too much. Applying a heat protection product before styling can help minimise damage and maintain shine.

Wear a hat in the sun

Sun exposure can also affect coloured hair, particularly lighter shades. Wearing a hat when you’re outside, or using products with UV protection can help prevent fading.

Invest in a hydrating conditioner

Regular conditioning treatments are essential for keeping coloured hair healthy. Well-moisturised hair reflects light more effectively, helping colour appear richer and more vibrant.

Keep up your hair appointments

Finally, keep up with your salon appointments. Toners, gloss treatments and root touch-ups can refresh your colour and help maintain a polished look. With the right care routine, your colour can stay brighter, shinier and healthier for much longer.
