Bored of your fringe? Three easy ways to style it differently

Getting a fringe can transform your entire look. The only problem? After a few weeks of wearing it exactly the same way every day, even the best fringe can start to feel a little… predictable.

The good news is you don’t need to grow it out—or book another haircut—to change things up. Whether yours is full and blunt, soft and wispy or somewhere in that awkward growing-out stage, a few simple styling tricks can make it look completely different.

Here are three ways to rethink your fringe.

1. Make it sleek and polished

There’s something about a smooth, glossy fringe that instantly makes the rest of your hair look more put together, just like this style sported by actress Daisy Edgar-Jones, below.

The trick is to style it while it’s still damp. Blow-dry your fringe from side to side rather than simply directing the dryer downwards. This helps it sit naturally and stops it developing too much of a curve.

Once dry, use a tiny amount of smoothing product if needed—but tiny is the important word here. Too much product near the roots and your freshly washed fringe can look ready for another shampoo before lunchtime.

Wear it with straight hair for a sleek finish or contrast it with a messy bun or ponytail for something a little more undone.

2. Part it for a curtain-fringe effect

If your fringe has grown a little longer, this is the perfect time to embrace it.

Create a centre part and style your fringe away from your face to turn it into soft, face-framing curtain bangs (Sabrina Carpenter or Daisy Edgar-Jones style). Use a round brush and hairdryer to direct each side outwards, then leave the hair to cool in position before touching it.

You want a gentle sweep rather than a big curl—the end result should look soft and effortless.

It’s also a clever way to get through that slightly frustrating stage between fringe trims. Suddenly your overgrown fringe looks entirely intentional.

3. Work with your natural texture

Fringes don't have to be poker straight.

If your hair naturally waves or curls, allowing your fringe to do the same can completely change the feel of your haircut—and potentially save you a lot of time in the morning.

Apply a small amount of your usual curl or styling product while your fringe is damp, then leave it to air-dry or gently diffuse it. Try not to overwork it; the idea is to enhance the texture that’s already there rather than force every strand into place.

The result is softer, more relaxed and perfect for those days when you want your hair to look good without looking too done.

Tempted by a fringe?

If you’re considering taking the plunge, the question isn't just whether a fringe will suit you—it's which fringe will suit you.

From full and blunt to wispy, sweeping or ’70s-inspired curtain bangs, the right style should work with your face shape and natural hair texture, as well as the amount of time you realistically want to spend styling it.

How to restore sun damaged hair this summer

July 29, 2026 Maddy Biddulph

We are really enjoying these long, sunny days but they can take a real toll on your hair. Just as UV rays can damage your skin, they can also weaken the hair cuticle, leaving strands dry, brittle and more prone to breakage.

Add in chlorine from swimming pools and salt water from holidays, and your hair can quickly lose its shine and softness. The good news is that a little extra care can make a big difference.

Give your hair a moisture boost

Start by using a nourishing shampoo and conditioner designed for dry or damaged hair, and treat your locks to a deep conditioning mask once a week to replenish lost moisture.

Protect your hair from the sun

If you're spending lots of time outdoors, wear a hat or scarf to shield your hair from the sun, or use a leave-in conditioner with UV protection.

Take a break from the heat

Try to limit the use of heated styling tools while your hair is recovering. If you do use a hairdryer, straighteners or curling tongs, always apply a heat protection spray first to prevent further damage.

Snip away split ends

Getting a fresh cut is essential. Removing split ends stops them travelling further up the hair shaft and keeps your hair looking healthier, thicker and fuller.

Treat your hair to some TLC

If your hair feels particularly dry or lifeless after summer, a professional conditioning treatment can help restore moisture, improve shine and leave your hair feeling soft, smooth and healthy again.

At our salon, we're always happy to recommend the best treatments and home-care products for your hair type, so you can enjoy healthy, glossy hair all year round. Just ask!

Beach waves made easy: the straightener styling trick you need to know

June 11, 2026 Maddy Biddulph

Beachy curls are one of those timeless, effortless-looking styles that actually take a little know-how to get right.

The good news? You don’t need a curling wand to achieve them. A straightener works just as well—sometimes even better—once you know the technique. Here’s how to create soft, textured beachy waves using a hair straightener.

Step one: Start with dry, fully brushed hair. Any knots will cause uneven bends, so take a moment to smooth everything out.

Step two: Apply a heat protectant spray before you begin—this is essential to protect your hair from heat damage and keep your waves looking glossy rather than frizzy.

Step three: Section your hair into manageable layers. The smaller the sections, the more defined your waves will be. If you want a more relaxed, undone look, go slightly larger with your sections.

Step four: Take your straightener and clamp it gently about halfway down the section of hair. Instead of pulling straight down, rotate the straightener 180 degrees away from your face while slowly gliding it down the strand. Think of it as creating an “S” shape with your hair as you move. Keep the motion smooth and continuous—this is what gives that natural, beachy bend.

For a more lived-in finish, alternate the direction of the curls as you move around your head. This prevents the style from looking too uniform and gives it that relaxed, just-off-the-beach vibe.

Step five: Once all your hair is done, let the waves cool completely before touching them.

Step six: Then gently run your fingers through to break them up.

Step seven: Finish with a light texturising spray or sea salt spray to add hold and that signature beachy texture.

The key is not perfection—messy, soft, and undone is exactly what makes this style work.

Five hair mistakes to avoid, says the man who created Jennifer Aniston's 'The Rachel' haircut

February 10, 2026 Maddy Biddulph

Even if you don’t recognise his name, you’ve definitely seen Chris McMillan’s work. He’s the celebrity hairstylist behind The Rachel—Jennifer Aniston’s iconic haircut from Friends—and he knows a thing or two about healthy hair.

In a recent TikTok, McMillan didn’t sugar-coat it, saying “winter is the worst for hair.” And honestly? He’s not wrong. Between freezing temperatures outside, dry heated air indoors, and styling hair more often, winter can be tough on both your hair and scalp.

At Pankhurst and Deane we wholeheartedly agree. The colder months put extra stress on hair, but the good news is you don’t need to completely change your routine—just make a few smart adjustments. Here are McMillian’s five common winter hair mistakes - and how to fix them.

1. Taking super hot showers

We get it—nothing feels better in winter than a steaming hot shower. But McMillan calls scalding hot water one of the biggest mistakes for hair health. Hot water strips away the natural oils your scalp needs, leaving hair dry, dull, and more prone to irritation.

Try this instead: Turn the temperature down slightly when washing your hair. Warm water is enough to cleanse without causing damage.

2. Not hydrating enough

Hydration is everything in winter. McMillan describes it as creating a barrier that protects hair from the elements—and that barrier really matters when hair is constantly moving between cold air outside and dry indoor heating.

A lightweight leave-in conditioner, serum or a small amount of oil can go a long way in keeping hair softer and less frizzy.

3. Wearing ‘protective’ styles that pull

Protective styles can help in winter—but only if they’re actually gentle. Tight ponytails, slicked-back buns, or braids that pull at the hairline can create ongoing tension, especially if worn regularly.

If a style feels uncomfortable, causes headaches, or pulls around the edges, it’s probably doing more harm than good.

4. Skipping treatment time

One of McMillan’s favourite tips is “multi-masking.” Basically, if you’re wearing a slicked-back style, turn it into a treatment moment. Apply a conditioning mask, nourishing oil, or deep conditioner, slick it back, and let it work while you go about your day.

It’s an easy way to add moisture without adding extra steps—perfect for winter when hair tends to feel drier than usual.

5. Heat styling without protection (or skipping conditioner altogether)

Heat styling plus dry winter air is a recipe for breakage if hair isn’t protected. McMillan stresses using heat protection every time and not skipping conditioner during the colder months.

Heat protectants help reduce damage and frizz, while regular conditioning keeps hair softer, smoother, and less prone to snapping.

Here’s the thing: Most winter hair damage is fixable. Simple changes—cooling down your showers, keeping hair hydrated, choosing styles that don’t pull, and always using heat protection—can make a noticeable difference.
